Overdose On Life (Part 1) w/Travis of The Gym Class Heroes

Several weeks ago Mickey Factz leaked "Overdose On Life" as a part of his weekly leak series. The track showcasing him also featured Drake, a Canadian artist/actor of Degrassi fame and Travis McCoy of the Gym Class Heroes. The man responsible for the production and bringing all the parties involved together is Omen. If you don't know who Omen is, he's done work with Fabolous, Mya, Ludacris and most recently working with Dr. Dre (We're all still waiting for Detox). Omen will be releasing his album, Be The Judge, later on this year where "Overdose On Life" is the first single off that project.

The Collective is the group of poets, who function as the voice of the movement and through spoken word, addresses the issues of our generation. And The Movement are those people who identify with and support their cause .

On June 19th, 2008 they will have their anniversary event @ the Bowery Poetry Lounge in L.E.S to celebrate three years of a growing cause that focuses on the active progression of black people...and the many more to come! As some of you may or may not know, Sean Bell of Queens, NY was murdered senselessly by 3 undercover police officers [on November of 2006]. Today the case that was supposed to send these cops to jail were acquitted on ALL charges. So basically, the justice system is not labeling discharging 50 shots as a crime, but as a procedure. Which means that every minority walking the streets of America is liable to get pummeled by a barrage of bullets. Me being an artist, I wrote this song in January 2007 and it is clearly as relevant as it was then as it is now. I ask people to listen to the song and pass it along as a testament to the death of Sean Bell. May he rest in peace and condolences go out to his family and friends.

It sounds like somebody has been reading Mickey's bio and running with certain statements in regards to NY Hip-Hop, i.e. "Why bring it back, when I can move it forward," but I digress. What I really do appreciate though is that this dialogue is being conducted and expressed, whether it be from an artist like Mickey Factz or Maino as well as from OGs such as Ed Lover and Uncle Ralph McDaniels. To see folks aligning themselves to support the people and culture of where they are from is what leads to an areas growth. We as a hip-hop community on all levels have a social responsibility to support the growth of our children, our artists, and those vehicles that are in place to move the culture forward, whether you be from NY, LA, ATL, the CHI or what have you. But always remember don't shit where you sleep. So stop shitting on YOUR children and YOUR artists, support them and you'll be rewarded. Respect.

SXSW 2008 was crazy. You had to be there to believe it. Mickey Factz & GFCnewyork was out there in Austin, TX unofficially, officially crashing parties. What the hell you expect, we're from New York. The New Generation, The Leaders of the New School, whatever you want to call it was out there in full effect. Game Rebellion, The Cool Kids, Santogold, K.i.D. Cudi, Kidz In The Hall, Curtis Santiago, Wale, Mano, Mic Terror and Hollywood Holt, and more. I sense a coup d'etat will be taking place in the near future, so fair warning to the industry. As Wu-Tang once said, "Protect Ya Neck." Anyhow here are some pics from the trip courtesy of Mapi.

Eliot Spitzer Resigns

I thought New York's love affair with hookers and prostitutes was long gone after 42nd street was converted into DisneyLand. Apparently my assumption was wrong; $80,000 wrong. Governor Eliot Spitzer resigned yesterday, after federal wiretap into a high-end prostitution outfit shed light on the zealous vice of his.

You'd think that after the Clinton scandal a few years ago and it being an election year, that some sort of "Political Correct-ness" would be a devote initiative. Once again the Clinton's are affected by this, since Spitzer's superdelegate support of Hilary will now be relinquished.

To step into the role will be, David Paterson, 53, will be the first African-American governor in NY history, and first legally blind offical in the Nation's history.

Chanel Iman On The Barney's Homepage

If you know anything about me, than you already know that I am absolutely in-love with Chanel Iman. Now, most people who know me contend that we share a vague resemblance, and that my love for her is out of narcissism. However, I'd like to argue that just because we're both light-skinned, tall, and because I have (arguably) almond-shaped eyes, does in no way mean we look even remotely alike (and even if that were the case, would I really admit that I'm a possible narcissist?)

Well, anyways, she's my favorite, and that's that. We haven't had a black supermodel since the '90s (save Liya Kebede), and I was elated to find her on the cover of Vogue last year (the new supermodel spread, revisiting the '90s piece, which was revisited once before in 2004). And although I sometimes wonder if she's too skinny (wait-- I think that's an oxymoron), I think she's most most fabulous thing to strut down the catwalk since Marc Jacobs' 1992, "grunge" collection for Perry Ellis. At just barely eighteen, she's been down more runways than Joan Rivers has had work done. I could talk for days about how much I love her, but the fact that she's far more adorable than any girl you know says enough.-Virginia Jackson-Reed

The Winter of My Discontent...

Ah, Winter. While it is a wondrous time of year, that wonder only seems to come at the end of the year; the time when city streets are crowded, and all is in a tizzy, preparing for the onslaught of holidays. However, by the time February arrives, the general consensus is "just shoot me." I must say that I am positively sick of Winter, and cannot wait for Spring.

As I am always so prepared, I pre-ordered the most fabulous Jill Stuart dress (straight from the runway and ad campaign) this afternoon. I can't wait until it arrives so I can try it on, and make sure it's not too short for me and my ridiculously long legs. But, that's neither here, nor there. It's still far too cold for my delicate, silk frock, and I'm pining for the warm days when I can pay no mind to my 34" inseam and sport shorts that'd make Miss Dukes herself blush.

In the mean time, this frigid weather seems to be coming in full force, sans cesse, and I can not bear it. But one thing that can warm up the coldest of days even better than a Venti hot chocolate at Starbucks is a Moncler jacket. Why invest in one? Because you'll never get invited to benefits at Bergdorf sporting your North Face. Don't quibble over the price; not all of their jackets cost $2,000. And even if they did, we're Americans; we have people living near the poverty line buying $200 sneakers (and they're not even posh ones!) This is so worth the money. Who knows? Maybe some hot, "snow bunny" will invite you to a relaxing weekend up in the Alps (or maybe you just won't stick out like a sore thumb next time you're buying Ksubi jeans at Barneys). -Virginia Jackson-Reed

I came across Sam Sparro after reading about him in the Radar section of the latest YRB Magazine. So then I decided to check out his song Black & Gold. This song is a hit in my book, it just has that "Access Granted" feeling. Then come to find out he has 2 videos for the song (one before the deal and the other after the deal, I'm assuming). Anyhow, I prefer the "After" video more than the "Before" video. The "Before" video is too "metro" for my liking, if you know what I mean. The "After" video is my favorite video of the year thus far.

So yesterday we headed out to the Rockaways to do a photoshoot for SPIN Magazine, which Mickey Factz will be featured in. We worked with one of our favorite photographers, Thomas Prior. He had previously shot Mickey for the Fader (Issue #51). Even though it was cold and so windy that I think all the angels in heaven were blowing all at once, the shots that Tom caught we're great and we had good time bugging out. Michelle Obama: The "Black, Jackie O."? Methinks not. However, the fly-est woman on the planet is black. Her name? Why Genevieve Jones, of bien sûr! She's magnificent; from her petite, wispy frame, to her flawless brown skin, and (perpetually well coiffed) shoulder-length mane, she possesses that je ne sais quoi that has captured the hearts of all the fashionistas on the New York social scene. No, wait-- I think I mistook her charm for her wardrobe. I mean, yes, she is a rather darling little gadfly, and that's why we love her so, she has a wardrobe that would make Naomi Campbell flush (which, given her gorgeous, chocolate complexion, would be presumably difficult to manage.) Perhaps what tickles me most is seeing her at events and shows with that filthy, little Cory Kennedy (with her perpetually greasy locks, and the smudged eyeliner that screams out "please, take me home and bathe me!"), in all likelihood I delight in that whole "princess and the pauper" dynamic that it creates. And while she neither attended college, nor is she a "trust fund baby," she has used her aforementioned charm to make her the "it" girl du jour. Alright, so I know what I said before about making sure not to get swept up in the hype, but to be quite honest, if she ran for President, I'd back her 100%; any woman this fabulous, who was able to climb the social ladder without fair skin and deep pockets must know something the rest of us don't. Oh, and Victoria Beckham, darling, please take notes; we don't want to see you top the Worst Dressed List two years in a row-- that certainly would not be "posh." -Virginia Jackson-Reed

I Think Someone Has A New Stylist

Well, at least I certainly hope so. That is to say, Lil Mama is looking pretty fab in her new video. Although I absolutely loathe her, and that horrid song, I must give credit where credit is due; I mean, this is inarguably an upgrade from some of her previous outfits (more notably, the "baby" garb she sported to the VMAs which was accompanied by a pacifier.) Black is always sleek, and patent leather is so hot right now. Most importantly, it doesn't look like she's trying too hard; every time I see her in a dress (she murdered that Chanel number-- and not in a good way,) I feel faint (or is that my diet, again?) Well, in any case, my only gripe would have to be her white, half-gloves. Don't get me wrong-- they're gorgeous, but gloves are my thing! Diane von Fürstenberg Studio’s new headquarters fits perfectly in New York City’s fashionable Meatpacking District, also known as the Gansevoort Market Historic District. The new, six-story building is wedged between two historical, landmarked facades that resemble the wall props in Cirque du Soleil’s La Nouba. One corner of the structure is topped by a Olot, Spain-made faceted glass sphere that is part of the penthouse suite and seems like a gigantic diamond fallen from the sky.

In the design, New York-based WORK Architecture managed to combine old and new, light and dark, openness and enclosure, artistry and practicality. The building houses DVF’s flagship store, a 5,000-square-foot showroom and event space, offices and studios for a 120 people, an executive suite, and a penthouse apartment.

The Leak - Week 8: Up High

So about a month and a half ago Mickey Factz started a weekly series titled The Leak on his myspace page. Every Tuesday night he uploads a new song to his page's playlist that would be available for free download to his avid listeners, supporters, haters, and so forth for ONE WEEK ONLY. After that week is up a new track goes up, leaving you to be left scouring the web for that exclusive that you may never be able to attain again. Anyhow recently I've been reprimanded for my slacking on not notifying our following on the GFCnewyork blog of this here Leak. And for that I greatly apologize.
