"Where My Soldiers Is At"

Greatest Hip-Hop Video of All Time: Victory, Puff Daddy ft. The Notorious B.I.G. & Busta Rhymes off of "No Way Out"

It was practically a movie...Years ahead of it's time [1997]. They still don't make hip-hop videos like this (Sorry Kanye, "
Stronger" can't touch this.)

The song is classic...Diddy even had quotables (
You ain't gotta like me/Your just mad cuz I tell it how it is, and you tell it how it might be.)

If you didn't know, now you know...peep game

Billy G.O.A.T

So yeah, I had to post this because a colleague of mine and I, are going back and forth on this issue, LL Cool J vs. Jay-Z. We don't know if it's actually going to go down, but to me personally I'm like just drop the track if it's going to be all that. I'm tired of the set-ups, the online videos, etc. hyping up a track and/or battle and then when you hear it, you're disappointed. To me what Jay said on Forbes Billion Dollar remix of I Get Money, was a clever line and something that needed to be said. I believe he looks at himself as being the Greatest of All Time, and that he's working on his way to becoming a certified billionaire, hence Billy Goat.

“I’m already the Goat, next stop, the billy…” - Jay-Z, I Get Money (Forbes Billion Dollar rmx)

Angie Phones Jay-Z to Discuss LL Cool J
Now, LL Cool Js vice may be that it's a slight jab at him since everybody and their mothers know that LL refers to himself as the Greatest of All Time. His vice may be that Jay is the head of a label that he helped build. His vice may be that he didn't get the label support that any artist would expect when releasing his last album. His vice may be some long history he's had with Jay, that's behind the scene that we'll never know the whole truths about. Or it may be all of the above. Whatever it is, if you're going to diss/battle him, just drop the track. I love you my man, but if this track is wack, I'm going to be extremely tight. And I think hip-hop should be to, especially New York hip-hop. Two legends going at each other because their proud, and then not putting up a legendary battle, will be a step backwards to me personally.

Same thing goes for you Jay. My man I love you. Personally I think you have the right to call yourself the G.O.A.T., because I think that you are. But if you decide to go at my man LL Cool J, please refrain from the subliminals, go straight at him. Please refrain from it being wack for the same reasons, I entailed above. And please refrain from becoming Michael Jordan after the 6th championship, because word is you are already on the road there...smh.

Peace

Who's the King of New York???

Now that the Kanye vs. 50 Cent battle is done with and the winner announced, lets proceed to the Heavyweight fight. Jay-Z has announced that he'll be releasing a new album, slated to be released on Nov. 6th. It is a concept album titled "American Gangster" inspired by the soon to be released film of the same name starring, Denzel Washington who plays Frank Lucas, an early 1970s Harlem Heroin Kingpin.

The challenger in this fight of epic proportions is Dame Dash and his soon to be released documentary, "Mr. Untouchable." Another film about a druglord, but this time it's Harlem's own Nicky Barnes.

Ah, this has controversy, competition, and money in the bank written all over it. Who do you think is going to win?

Shout outs to Miss Info for shedding light on this.

Check out the artwork above for the films. Coincidence??? I think not.

Below are the trailers to the film.

Stadium Status

This is phenomenal...this is why MTV was suppose to give him the main stage. This is just inspiring...

G-Unit + Dipset = Classic

Here we go. '07 is full of classic moments in hip-hop and here we go with another one. Jim Jones & Juelz Santana rock the stage with 50 Cent and the rest of G-Unit last night at the Hammerstein Ballroom. This is a prime example how 2 camps can put away their differences, and go for the bigger picture. A great moment for New York hip-hop. Let this be the beginning in unity for New York hip-hop.

Jena Six

GFCnewyork blog is a cultural forum and any and everything involving our culture will always have an outlet to be addressed and expressed here. I'd like to thank artists who address civil and social issues not only in their music but in the real world. In this instance, I commend Mos Def for being vocal about the injustice facing a group of black students in Jena, Louisiana who are being charged with attempted murder for beating up a white student that was taunting them with racial slurs. These kids are facing sentences of 20 to100 years in prison, for basically wanting the free will to sit under a tree. Some people within the culture are getting riled up due to the lack of media attention on the case, as well as the absence of key voices within the culture who are not addressing or informing the public of the matter.

We over here, are going to play our part in informing the public of the matter. I don't think boycotting hip-hop records is a rationale reaction to that matter. That is a misguided application of your frustrations. I believe this is an issue for all people, not only black. If the Vote or Die campaign from the last election can be as impactful as it was, then we all know the voice of hip-hop can and will be heard.

People please take the time to inform yourself on the issue, Jena Six, and sign the PETITION. A large number of the American population should be affected by this issue and want change, so the petition should reflect that. If you want to further contribute your time, finance or both to the matter feel free to email info@freethejena6.org

Foreign Sounds

Mixtape season is definitely not over. As leaders of the new school we are definitely putting this culture on our backs, and music is definitely one of the premier assets of culture. So expect another mixtape from Mickey Factz, the introduction of K.i.D Cudi, and more. Up to bat, in their latest offering is our brothers from another mother from another galaxy, A.L.I.E.N. They'll be releasing their mixtape within the coming week, but come out this Thursday, August 30th as they have Mixtape Madness going down at SWAY (I'll be back from Vegas for this one).

Rocksmith Fall '07

It's that time of the year that all the brands get their lookbooks and line sheets together, so that the retail buyers can begin their selection at which tags they believe their customers will be popping for this fall/winter season. So Rocksmith Clothing recently reached out to us to handle the art direction for their lookbook of this seasons collection. The eyes of the lens belong to coming-of-age photographer Brian Cleaver, and as you see the shots came out great. Thanks to everyone that participated in the shoot (Fausto of LaVie Clothing, Leo of LV the Stylist, Christian, Pan of Trace Magazine, Dice, Johnny Killface, Jared Ryder, Osa of Complete Technique, Jerry and more). Visit HighSnobiety to check out the rest of the line.

Also be sure to check out the new Kilo Goods collection at HighSnobiety as well.

FYI

The good folks over at Garbege Clothing reached out to us to do an interview. Like Jay once said, "Real recognize real, and you looking familiar." Go over to their FYI blog to check out the interview and other news going on in this culture you live to die for.

C'est LaVie

I feel so good...Oh yeah, this is the life. And if you aren't living it, you sure wish you were. The summer has been good to us thus far, a lot will be coming soon to you, our fellow GFCnewyork patrons. 1st up is our good friends and colleagues at LaVie Clothing. If you haven't heard the buzz about them by now, then you've already fallen back in the race...Catch Up Dunny. Their 1st tee installment "You Love My Style" created a frenzy to the point where it started getting bootlegged. If that isn't telling you, that you're doing something right as a designer of a clothing line, I don't know what it is. Now they're readying to release their 2nd installment "Too Fly for Earth" online at 11:59pm tonight. Everybody better get in where they fit in, in a hurry because they're bound to move real quick. Especially the Aqua, GFCnewyork colorway.

Have fun ;)

Cipha Don't Get Gassed!!!

This past July 4th, Funk Master Flex went off for 5hours (no commercials) on Hot97. He dedicated the set to 90s hip-hop music. For all those that weren't blessed with the opportunity to listen to Hot97 in it's heyday, New York radio was actually dominated by New York artists. New York radio was known for breaking records, not being the corporate bandwagon it has become today. Here's video footage and audio links from Flex's 5hours of 90's mayhem, at Hot97 this past Wednesday.

KwaZz Picks Up Diploma

We at GFCnewyork know how much education is important to a person's growth. So we feel it's only right that we showcase that aspect of our culture as well. KwaZz, our GFC brother recently graduated from the City College of New York. Below is video footage of him as he goes to pick up his diploma. We hope this serves as inspiration and motivation for our peers who are continuing their studies, those that are contemplating on continuing them, and those that will soon be embarking on that journey of higher education. These are the results of persistence and dedication.

LiveMechanics NYC Tastemakers Ad

GFCnewyork has been working with LiveMechanics on a few things to increase the brands visibility out here in the NYC market. We decided we'd reach out to a few of our friends and colleagues that are paving their way in the streets of this here, "New" New York to showcase how to wear the clothes and not vice versa. Swag is always the last and most important element that brings a whole ensemble together, and it looks like NYC's swag is still ever so present.

Good looks to SC @ GotMusic, Antoine @ New Era, Johnny Killface @ Complex Magazine, Mr. Belchez, Scottie Brix of Scott on the Rocks, Mickey Factz, S dot Lambo, Tiffany @ Recon, Curtains & Torch of High Society Life, LV the Stylist, Sais, and all the other folks that came out to make this shoot a success.

SWAGGER US Launch Party

This past Thursday, March 15th New York was in full effect as music bumped throughout Stereo. Hip-Hop heavyweights like Just Blaze, DJ Soul, & Clark Kent contributed to the musical landscape as they held down the 1s and 2s. Folks from Lemar & Dauley, Alife, Laced Magazine, Stacks & Bundles, Kilo Goods, Belchez, Scott On The Rocks, Flight Club, A.L.I.E.N., Nom De Guerre and more were in attendence. And performances from Kanye West and Lupe Fiasco solidified that this event was Big Business.

The event was to kick-off the US Launch of Japanese brand, SWAGGER. SWAGGER founders Big O and Iggy were in attendence with the rest of the SWAGGER family, to celebrate what is only the beginning to bringing the swagger back to the streets of the U.S. (By the amount of times I've just mentioned SWAGGER, I think it's clear that we love SWAGGER...haha)

Laced Magazine - Issue 3: Fire & Ice

They're Baaaaaaaackkk!!! Everybody has been wondering "What's going on with Laced Magazine?" And they've been simply replying, "Patience is a Virtue." And virtuous they are, with the 3rd issue of Laced Magazine. They hit us with a one-two punch, a fire & ice double cover issue. Next they hit us with an uppercut, upping the number of pages to 120. Then for the knockout they unload on us with features from The Clipse, Ice Cream Skate Team, Pharrell Williams, The Pack, Bodega, Creative Recreation, and pages upon pages of products galore...Sheesh!!!

Did I ever mention to you that it's an independent minority owned publication, in a growing competitive market. These guys are going against publications like Complex, Mass Appeal, and more. Show your support and pick up the issue.

New issue will be stocked at your favorite retailer come March 28th. Cop one or the other, or you can be gungho about it and cop both.

Center Stage Awaits Mickey Factz

Come thru and witness the man, the myth, and soon to be legend as he'll be performing twice within the coming week. Oh man, it's going to be one of those classic moments you'll be reliving and telling stories of years from now. Sorta like if you were present for Run D.M.C. at Madison Square Garden in 1986, the DMX & Jay-Z battles, Biggie Smalls performing "Party & Bullshit." It's one of those moments, you'll just have to be there to experience. Locations, dates, and times are on the flyer above.

GFC Recommendation: Make it out to the show at Sputnik this Sunday, February 25th, that's when the truth will be unveiled.

Last Nite...The Manor...Sheesh!!!

Shit is so wild in the '07, and last night was no exception. On a Tuesday night, The Manor, located at 73 Eighth Avenue between 13th & 14th Street, is officially the spot to be at every week. Sheesh, was it heavy in there last night. Great music, a mixed crowd of movers, shakers, hipsters, and trendsetters, and bottles popping everywhere...this is how you're suppose to party. Thank you to all those that made it out last night...Nicole, I know you had a great time, happy birthday to you once again. Johnny Nunez for always taking those right shots. The Aphilliates own DJ Drama & DJ Sense; the RIAA can't stop a good party. All the press that was in the building from GIANT, People, W magazine, etc. And of course our family & friends, GFC, La Vie, Machete, A.L.I.E.N., Hang Em High, and others.

Don't forget this is a weekly event, so if you were foolish enough to miss out on last night's festivities. Why would you want to continue such a habit ;)

Levi's Lawsuits Coverage in New York Times

Levi's copyright infringement lawsuits make the New York Times. The article is an "OK" read, since I'm more concerned with the international denim brands that are affected by the suit, and not the domestic brands like Von Dutch and Rock & Republic which this article seems to focus more on. Mickey Factz - I'm Sean (50 Shots More)

Mickey Factz is at it again, leaking another introspective track for the people. For all those that know about the wrongful death of Sean Bell, it's another tragic scenario that has continually plagued our communities till this day. The epidemic that is racial profiling and the excessive/misappropriated use of force by the NYPD. In the song, Mickey Factz revisits the events of that night through the eyes of Sean Bell, or the way he figures Sean would've seen it. The track really makes you take a sit back and realize that Sean Bell's fate, could've been the fate of anyone of us. And that we must continue to protest and ask for reformation and justice within the police department.

"This song goes out to all the friends and family of Sean Bell, and to all those that lost a friend/s or family member/s from the bullets and/or force of those that are "allegedly" suppose to protect us."

Levi's Pulling the Seams On Japanese Denim

Ohh how the cookie has crumbled. Japanese denim, specifically Japanese "repro" denim companies and those distributing and selling the products of are being sued by Levi's for trademark infringement. Effective this past Friday, January 19th, brands such as Studio D’Artisan, Iron Heart, Toyo/Sugarcane, Oni (BS United), and Samurai have been pulled from store shelves.

I'm sure denim advocates out here in the states are finding them-selves on the edge feeling very blue and green (those who are clever know what I mean). The denim market currently will be in a frenzy for some time. The questions that will arise are:

1. How will the new designs from Japanese "repro" denim companies, reflect the classic aesthetics of LVC denim without infringing upon their intellectual property rights?

2. Will the new designs meet the standards of the retailers and consumers that were previously stocking and buying their products?

3. How will this affect the business of boutique shops that structured their business model on this niche market product?

4. How intense will the post-market effects contribute to an upsurge in re-selling and/or black market Japanese "repro" denim being produced?

For more info on the case check out Foosh

GFC New Year

Last year was our first year, and we'd love to thank all those that took the journey with us. This year is the year where we all are in the Pursuit of Happyness. Be sure to look out for more coming from the family. Witness as Laced Magazine grows and gets even better, Mickey Factz and his music get taken to another level, Lemar & Dauley as they become streetwear heavyweights, and more. This 2nd year we're going to ask the public to "Say When..." Hope you all are ready.

Happy New Year!!!
