Let's Play The Middle
Video: CRS - US Placers (Directed by Vashtie Kola)
“Here’s the latest video I directed. I wasn’t commissioned to do it, so I spent my own dough to make it. I wanted to make a video for this song because I was obsessed with both the original Thom Yorke version and the Kanye West Mixtape version. It was a lot of fun to make. Most of the clothing is mine, like little Pharrell’s whole wardrobe. The props are mine, like the Brooklyn Machine Works bike and the Supreme “Last Supper” decks. That’s actually Plain Pat in the video, Kanye’s A&R.”
This is how true artist work. By taking the initiative because of love for the craft. A true kindred New Yorker at work here. Kudos. Watch the video below and check out behind the scene shots from the video shoot by clicking HERE.
Here's another video for those who've been living under a rock in New York and don't know who Vashtie Kola is...lol

The New Face of Harlem
Harlem has undergone many changes in the past few years. The region, once home to African-American legends like Malcolm X, Adam Clayton Powell Jr., and Langston Hughes, was the setting of the intellectual and cultural Harlem Renaissance Movement in the 1920s and 1930s. Today, Harlem's prominent African-American population appears to be diminishing; the rapid increase of rent, development of high-priced luxury condos, and the difficulty to survive as a small business all attribute to the dramatic new look of Harlem World. In one word, gentrification.
Columbia University, located on 116th and Broadway, is the owner of most of the property on Broadway Avenue. Yesterday the university's latest plan to expand into West Harlem was met by hostile protests from neighborhood activists, preservationists, and affordable housing advocates. Columbia's plan to construct a 17-acre arts, business and science campus in Manhattanville was approved by The City Planning Commission. The university is considering the use of eminent domain, which allows an organization to take over public property for private use.
So where does that leave residents and small businesses? Keep watching - I guarantee that in a few years, Harlem will be much...lighter.

In The News
Oprah Winfrey will be joining Barack Obama on his campaign trail next month. Winfrey, an avid supporter of Obama, will make appearances in Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina with the Democratic presidential candidate. Winfrey's support is key as Barack fights to earn the critical women's vote.
Jarrel Gray, a 20-year-old African American man, was killed this past Sunday after a deputy shot Gray with a Taser. The deputy was responding to a fight in an apartment complex in Frederick, Maryland. It is reported that he asked the men involved to put their hands up, and all but Gray did. The deputy shot Gray with the Taser, and Gray fell unconscious and was pronounced dead shortly after at the Frederick Memorial Hospital. The deputy is currently on suspension with pay.

Yeah, B!
At last night's American Music Awards show, Beyonce won the International Artist Award, making her the first woman to ever take the title. Black woman, might I add. Beyonce humbly accepted the award and said, "I am so blessed to wake up every morning and do what I love to do. I don't take it for granted. I'm so grateful, I'm so honored and I'm so humbled by this award." Kudos to Beyonce and her continued success as a worldwide entertainer.

Wet Not Dry
My man, Jason Scott has begun his journey in taking over the New York Nightlife with the official launch of his Scott On The Rocks brand and website a few weeks ago. Now he's just launched his blog, Wet, Not Dry. The blog with it's eccentric cast of bloggers will chronicle club politics, music, art, alcoholism, film, style, sex, drugs & all that good stuff. This should be real entertaining.
Rewind: Room Service, Wednesday, Nov 14th
I got too ahead of myself, I forgot to tell you about the 1yr Anniversary party for Room Service. It's going to be utterly insane. DJ Steve Aoki will be orchestrating the evening's score being accompanied by Chromeo. And then the people that will be in the building from Jason Scott & Scott on the Rocks, Kwasie Kwazz & GFCnewyork, Dirty Jax Clothing, Kesh from the UK, and more. It'll definitely be the place to be this coming Wednesday, don't miss out.

Righteous Kill Trailer
We haven't seen Deniro & Pacino in a film together since HEAT. So this becomes automatically a must see film. Even your boy Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson is starring in the film.
The one thing that throws me off though, is that trailers are suppose to get you hype to see the film. This trailer is cool, but they sporatically throw some clips of 50 in there to show you that he's in the film. The placements don't make sense though. And they're selection in music for the backdrop of it seems off, like that of a subpar action films. I hope this isn't foreshadowing what's to come.
Jay-Z's an Artful Dodger
"Scion, LLC, a joint venture between Iconix Brand Group, Inc. and Shawn 'Jay-Z' Carter, today announced that it has acquired the brand Artful Dodger(R) from Sovereign State, LLC. The purchase price for the brand was approximately $15 million, paid in cash by Scion."

Crimeless Punishment
The conviction in the Wilson v. State case was based on a video tape of Genarlow receiving oral sex and engaging in intercourse with a 15-year old girl at a New Year's Eve party in 2005. A poorly written Georgia state law led to his ten year sentence; at the time of Genarlow's conviction, provisions for similarity in age that allowed underage consent to be taken into account were only applicable to vaginal sex. So basically, Genarlow spent three years in jail for getting head. Crazy. A former honor student and star athlete, Genarlow is excited about returning to his normal life and picking up the pieces. We are celebrating this long overdue victory for Genarlow and his family.

Excuses for Nooses
A friend sent me this disturbing video that accuses CNN of reporting biased stories on hate crimes that favor African-Americans. The video in a nutshell: Black people are killers and need to stop crying over the recent noose stories in the news. I am on going on a YouTube hiatus for the evening. Over and out.
Norfolk 7
Exit Jena 6, enter Norfolk 7. A group of 7 African-American boys were caught on tape jumping a 13 year old white boy. We supported the Jena 6 - don't support the Norfolk 7.
No Words
We here at GFC are no fans of racism. However, we also don't condone or dismiss ignorance. You remember the Jena Six, the group of young men in Louisiana who were victims of excessive sentencing in a racially charged series of disputes? A recent YouTube video shows a not so vulnerable side of one the defendants, Robert Bailey. While activists including Mos Def, Cornell West and Al Sharpton protested on his behalf, Robert was allegedly flossing and thugging on his My Space page. Sensationalism could be at play here...You be the judge.

Natural Hair: A Glamour No No
This type of ignorance is infuriating. As a Black woman with natural hair, I was really offended by the staff writer's comments. She clearly has no clue about Black hair care. To assume that afros and dreadlocks are a political statement is pretty offensive and...stupid. Unfortunately, these types of comments don't surprise me at all.

That's My N*GG*
"I'm a street disciple...I'm talking to the streets. Stay out of our business. You ain't got no business worrying about what the word 'nigger' is or acting like you know what my album is about without talking to me. Whether you in the NAACP or you Jesse Jackson. I respect all of them ... I just want them to know: Never fall victim to Fox. Never fall victim to the sh-- they do. What they do is try to hurry up and get you on the phone and try to get you to talk about something you might not know about yet...If Cornell West was making an album called Nigger, they would know he's got something intellectual to say...To think I'm gonna say something that's not intellectual is calling me a nigger, and to be called a nigger by Jesse Jackson and the NAACP is counterproductive, counter-revolutionary."
Click HERE to read the rest of the story.
I can't wait for this album to come out.

Blacks Are Members of the Less Intelligent Race...
For someone that is to be of the more intelligent race, I find this scientist's argument groundless and based on unsubstantiated evidence. What are the "tests" that he references that prove his stance? How does his belief explain the genius of historic and contemporary Black pioneers -- Dr. Benjamin Carson, George Washington Carver, and the builders of the Egyptian pyramids, just to name a few?
But what do I know, I am a member of the less intelligent race, right? To read the complete article, see the related link HERE

N*GG* Please...
Kudos to Nas for continuously addressing issues, whether it is in a tasteful matter or not is for you to decide. But as your grandmother would do to you, sometimes you need to be force fed no matter the taste; this being one of them.
Seems like "folks" are scared of the word N*GG* now. They weren't scared 300, 200, 100, 50, 10, 5 , 1 year ago. This is straight up comedy, look how they're acting. Do they really care about it's affect on society or are they on the bandwagon with the rest???
Whether or not Nas names his album N*GG*, to me, is not the issue here. I believe he's stuck the challenge to American society and corporate America. Let's see whether or not constitutional rights will be upheld or reduced to obsolete ideals. Let's see if media will continue riding the artist/s or start addressing the idea of corporate responsibility. And most importantly, the continuation of racial and cultural dialogue because we can't allow it to be swept under the rug...Oh yea, last but not least, we can't forget promoting an upcoming album of one pop cultures prominent artists ;)
To teach, learn, and make money at the same time...That's what I call Education at its finest.
